Changes to services 28, 51, 57, 58 & X59

2 years ago Mon 5th Dec 2022

From Sunday 8th January the following changes will be made to how we serve St. Edeyrns Village. This also affects the current service for Cardiff East Park and Ride and Cardiff Gate Business Park.

The current X59 was introduced as part of the development of St. Edeyrns Village.  This service also helped maintain the service between Cardiff East P&R and the city centre and the weekday extension to certain journeys to Cardiff Gate Business Park.  The funding for this service ceases from January 2023. Regrettably, we are unable to continue to operate the service in its current form without this funding.  The level of regular usage and revenue generated across all of the route isn’t sufficient enough to continue with the current timetable.

We will introduce a partial replacement for services between St. Edeyrns and the city centre, however, the Park & Ride service will cease along with the weekday extension of certain journeys to Cardiff Gate Business Park.

There will be a new hourly 59 service from St. Edeyrns to the city centre (Churchill Way) throughout the week.  Additionally, weekdays, 2 morning journeys on route 57 will also start from St. Edeyrns.

The Cardiff East P&R site will remain operational to continue to provide the H59 service between Cardiff East P&R and UHW Heath Hospital.  There is no change to this service.

For Cardiff Gate Business Park please use routes 57 and 58 to Heol Pontprennau.  This does involve a short walk to reach the main area of the business park.

Full timetables are and details per route are shown below.

Services 57/58

On Mondays to Fridays the 06:52 service 57 journey from the city centre will extend from Pontprennau (ASDA) to St. Edeyrns Village. Also, the current 06:35 and 07:40 service 57 journeys from Pontprennau (ASDA) will start at St. Edeyrns Village at 06:29 and 07:34 respectively, then from Pontprennau (ASDA) as now to the city centre.

Please click here for the new weekday timetable.  There are no changes to the current Saturday or Sunday timetable.

New Service 59

The current X59 will be replaced by new route 59 between St. Edeyrns and the city centre (Churchill Way).  Buses will follow the current route, omitting Cardiff East P&R and the city centre terminal point becomes Churchill Way not Dumfries Place.  The bus will also observe all stops on Newport Road.

We will review the usage of the replacement 59 service and changes to route 57 journeys shown above over the next few months.

Also, from Monday 9 January we will be making minor changes to services 28 & 51, as follows:

Service 28

The 15:35 journey, Monday to Fridays, from Cardiff High School to the city centre will no longer run. Please note that the 15:31 journey from Cardiff High School will continue to run.

Service 51

The 14:44 departure from Greyfriars Road on Mondays to Fridays, will be retimed to depart 11 minutes later at 14:55.  This journey previously terminated at Rhyd-Y-Penau Crossroads, but from Monday 9 January will be extended to the city centre (Greyfriars Road), running from Rhyd-Y-Penau Crossroads to the city centre direct via Heathwood Road, Caerphilly Road and North Road. This journey WILL NOT run via the Heath Hospital, however it has been timed to provide pupils at Corpus Corpus School with a bus at 15:35 from Pentwyn Road to Rhyd-Y-Pennau Crossroads, Heathwood Road and Birchgrove.
